We understand you’re Rug, Carpet and Tapestry are an important investment that will last for generations if cared for properly. To protect your heirloom, we offer professional cleaning every 2 to 3 years and more often if it’s subject to frequent heavy traffic or accidents. Dirt particles and pet urine can cause the rug's fibers to become brittle and more sensitive to damage. We will properly dust, hand-wash, spot clean urine stains, and dry to clear the rug of these particles and help restore your rug's luster.

While handwoven Oriental Rugs are famous for their durability, some older carpets may need restoration. Restoration differs from repair in its efforts to accurately duplicate the materials and construction of the original piece. Worn areas can be rewoven, frayed ends can be secured, and the rug can be stitched or tinted.

Our specialists are trained to work on antique and new Oriental Rugs and Tapestries with utmost skill, patience and attention to detail. We will help restore your rug's beauty and elegance to its past glories so it may be cherished by present and future generations.

General Care, Maintenance, and Cleaning Instructions for Rug + Carpet

The following recommended maintenance and cleaning instructions are provided to our interior designers, architects, and purchasing agents with the intent to include in clients maintenance package at the completion of the installation. We, Silk Road Rug, Inc., manufactures and services handwoven rugs and carpet, in addition we provide professional textile cleaning, restoration, and alteration services to-the-trade and retail clients. The terms "carpet" and "rug" are sometimes used interchangeably. Rug generally means a textile floor covering that is not fastened down and that does not extend over the entire floor. Carpet usually refers to a floor covering that is installed and fastened down from wall to wall. Maintaining your quality purchase will repay you by keeping its beauty for many years.

Basic Care:

Carpet cleaning is all about developing a routine. If you get into a good routine and keep it up, you will see great results. Here are simple steps to keep your carpet and rug clean and looking great:
Vacuum regularly and more frequently in high traffic areas. As a rule of thumb, you should vacuum at least once a week. However, the more foot traffic over your carpet, the more you need to vacuum. Frequent vacuuming is a carpet’s best friend. This will remove the fine dirt particles that can lodge between the fibers and cause additional wear. For best results, use a suction only vacuum: no beater bar, no rotary power head. The vacuum cleaner dust bag should be changed when half full. Filters in your heating and air conditioning systems should be changed regularly.

Clean spots and spills quickly with products that do not damage the carpet or cause it to resoil quicker. With today’s stain-resistant carpet, treating spots and stains has never been easier. While no carpet is completely stain proof, the key is to act quickly with the right solution to spot the stain. Folex is a good easy to use light stain remover and Naturals Miracle works well for pet stains. For natural fibers, we recommend spot cleaning with dry cleaning products only , like Capture, Host, Wool Dri. Pretest spot-removal in an inconspicuous area.
  • Blot liquids with a dry, white absorbent cloth or plain white paper towels (no prints or colors). Using a printed or colored material may transfer ink or dye to your damp carpet. Continue until the area is barely damp. Semisolids, like food spills, may need to be scooped up with a spoon. Solid, dried bits can be vacuumed.
  • Do not scrub or use a brush! Bristles and scrubbing can damage the carpet. Fraying and texture change are the likely results.
  • Use a solvent to treat the spot or stain. Though these have been laboratory tested, you should still pretest any cleaner on a scrap of carpet or an unseen area of your carpet.
  • Follow the product’s directions carefully. (Note: more is not better.) Apply a small amount of the cleaner to a white cloth and work in gently, from the edges to the center. Blot; don’t scrub. You may need to do this several times to remove the spot. After the spot is gone, blot the area with clear water once or more to remove any remaining product.
Professionally deep clean your carpets with Silk Road Rug, Inc. every 12 to 18 months to remove embedded dirt, pet stains and grime.
Stop dirt at the door by using mats outside and in, taking your shoes off when you enter the house and changing your air filters to reduce airborne dust particles.
Rotate your rug twice a year to avoid traffic wear spots on your rug.
Keep away from prolonged moisture.
Use non-skid rug pads when used indoors, we carry multiple premium pads and recommend replacing them due to pet urine stains or when dry.
Do not apply stain repellent treatments that contain silicone because they tend to accelerate carpet soiling.
We do not recommend anything that contains Oxy clean for spotting, as it tends to change dye color if not flushed properly.

Special Carpet Cleaning Tips for Pet Owners:Vacuum carpet more frequently to capture pet hair and dander from your pet’s fur.
Use Natures Miracle or other solutions designed that are specifically designed for pet stains and odors. We do not recommend anything that contains Oxy clean for spotting, as it tends to change dye color if not flushed properly.
Clean up new messes promptly and then follow the steps for spot and stain removal.
  • Use small hand extractors for quick cleanups of pet accidents, but remember that these quick clean ups don’t take the place of periodic deep cleaning.
  • Have your carpet professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months More frequently if necessary.
  • Don’t use a steam cleaner when dealing with urine spots because the heat will set the stain and the smell. Extracting the spill with a wet-vacuum and rinsing with cool water will reduce the odor. If necessary, contact us to deep wash and remove pet stains and odors permanently.

FIBER CONTENT:
The starting point of carpet is the fiber, a fine thread-like unit that is converted into yarn then tufted or woven into carpet and rug. There are four primary fibers used in carpet today: Wool, Nylon, Polypropylene (Olefin) and Wool Blends. As for hand-woven rugs, fibers are more exotic and different technic used to spin the yarn, there are multiple fibers we use for rugs: Silk, Premium Wool, Hemp, Jute, Linen, Cotton, Viscose, Tencel, and Banana Silk. It is important to know your rug and carpet fiber content before attempting to spot clean.

Premium Wool:
Wool has been the standard in floorcovering for centuries and represents all the qualities that synthetic fibers try to emulate. We use only the finest wools from around the word, which provides all the benefits that wool has to offer. Naturally resilient to dirt and soiling makes wools exceptionally easy to maintain. Wool is also non-allergenic, and naturally flame retardant. The combination of strength and durability ensures that your carpet will maintain its long lasting beauty. Wool is the classic choice for floor covering material. Wool has been used for carpet making since ancient times. It will last throughout the years. Its superior properties assure quality, function and design. Wool is an animal fiber taken from the hair of the sheep. These protein fibers have characteristics that make wool the premium classic floor covering material. Today, wool used for carpet making comes from sheep in countries like New Zealand, Argentina, Nepal, Afghanistan, Armenia, Morocco, Egypt, and the United Kingdom.
Wool is a biodegradable natural fiber and one of the most environmentally forgiving flooring products. Wool is a renewable product and therefore has less impact on the environment. Wool has a longer life cycle than other fibers resulting in a smaller environmental footprint. Wool is a non-allergenic fiber and does not promote the growth of bacteria and dust mites, or give off harmful emissions. Wool cleans better and won’t soil quickly due to its natural soil resistance, making chemical stain protection treatments unnecessary. Wool fibers are air purifying which absorb and neutralize polluting gases such as formaldehyde, sulphur dioxide and nitrous oxides.
VISCOSE, ART SILK, BANANA SILK, BAMBOO SILK:
Viscose fibers are a natural fiber and are inherently absorbent and should not be placed in areas that are damp or where spills are likely to occur (kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and porches). If spills do occur blot immediately with a clean dry cloth and apply a dry clean agent such as Host or Capture, follow the recommended instructions for dry clean products, multiple applications are sometimes needed
Give your carpet the normal protection from direct sunlight that you would give to any colored fabric.  Fading can be caused by emissions from heating fuels or chemicals such as pesticides, household cleaning agents and other household items.
SISAL, SEAGRASS, MOUNTAIN GRASS, HEMP:
Sisal's textured look is a favorite of interior designers. Sisal is a natural fiber derived from the 'agave sisalana' cactus plant. Sisal grows in semi-arid regions. The largest producers of sisal are located in northeast Brazil and Africa. Sisal fibers (which can be up to three feet long) are harvested by hand from the leaves of the cactus plant. Sisal is not the same fiber as coir or jute. Sisal is stronger and more durable than other natural fibers. Sisal is therefore preferred for carpet and rugs. Living rooms, family rooms, entry halls, bedrooms, computer workstations, home offices, exercise rooms and covered patios. Natural fibers provide a massaging underfoot, which is preferred for rooms where you do not sit on the floor. Sisal should be used in a covered area protected from the elements. Natural fiber rugs are highly recommended for enclosed and screened porches. Do not expose to rainfall or allow to become water-saturated (i.e. sisal and seagrass are NOT for bathroom, sauna, Jacuzzi, uncovered patio deck, swimming pool or roof top patios).
JUTE:
Although traditionally used as carpet backing, is now being used for Jute area rugs and carpet. Jute is a long, shiny fiber that can be spun into coarse, strong threads. The fibers are off-white to brown and 3 to 15 feet (0.9 to 4.5 meters) long. Jute fibers are composed primarily of the plant materials cellulose, lignin, and pectin. Jute is a rainy season crop that grows best in warm, humid climates. China, India, and Bangladesh rank as the top producers, where other than area rugs they are also woven into curtains, chair coverings, carpets, and burlap. Its soft texture makes Jute rugs a welcome choice for bedroom floors, but it is not a practical material for areas of heavy wear.

TENCEL:
TENCEL® is a natural, man made fiber derived from wood pulp (Eucalyptus) sourced from sustainable tree farms. Tencel® textiles are created through the use of cutting edge green technology with a minimal impact on the environment.
NYLON:
Durable, Resilient & Versatile. Nylon is the most durable of all synthetic carpet fibers. Nylon has superb resiliency, which helps keep your carpet’s beauty for longer. Nylon also has inherent anti-microbial properties, is resistant to moisture and has good cleanability. DuPont first introduced nylon in 1938, since then; nylon has been developed further and improved. Nylon is a petrochemical synthetic fiber made from carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen. Today's greatly improved 'treated nylon fibers' are sometimes referred to as 'sixth generation'. This started the era of modern synthetic fibers for apparel, industrial applications and tufted carpet. Nylon has good resilience, soil resistance, abrasion retention, durability, and color retention. With issues such as soiling and cleaning, nylon performs very well and is resistant to staining if it receives a stain-resistant treatment. This enable enhanced removal of soil and most common household food and beverage stains through professional cleaning. Nylon has superb abrasion resiliency and displays less pile compaction in comparison to other synthetic yarns. Nylon has good cleaning characteristics and may be the better choice if exposed to grease, cooking oils, or household lubricants, and holds-up to staining and soiling well if treated and solution dyed. Nylon fibers retain their color very well and display good resistance to indirect sunlight fading. Like all synthetics, Nylon is anti-microbial and shows excellent resistance to mildew resulting in less bacterial growth. Nylon is fire retardant and difficult to ignite and produces little or no smoke making it the ideal choice for CHILDREN's room, playroom or family room.

POLYPROPYLENE, Royaltron, (Olefin)
Was first introduced into the carpet industry from Italy in the late 1950's. Offers good stain and moisture resistance. Proven performance features, unique aesthetics and exceptional value for both residential and commercial carpeting. These yarns are offered in a range of deniers, which are twisted and heat set. Polypropylene is the fastest growing carpet fiber in popularity. It is naturally stain and fade resistant. Polypropylene will resist signs of wear, with unique long-lasting fibers. Polypropylene is stain resistant and does not absorb moisture making spills and stains easily removable with normal cleaning agents. Solution-dyed yarn extrusion is not only safe for the environment; color fast and protects the colors in new carpet from fading and cleaning solvents. Carpets made from polypropylene fibers are permanently anti-static. No more electric shocks. Carpets made from polypropylene fibers are anti-microbial and do not support the growth of mites or bacteria. Polypropylene fiber carpets are free of toxic elements and environmentally friendly. Because color is "melted in" during production of the fiber, it eliminates the traditional use of large quantities of water for dyeing, contributing to the preservation and the quality of our water.

Benefits of Polypropylene
· All-weather rug construction is pet-friendly and mold- and mildew-resistant
· Yarn-dyed fiber has incredibly rich color that holds its vibrancy over time
· A stain-resistant, water-repellent synthetic material
· Resistant to high heat temperatures so yarns will not wilt in hot climates
· All-weather rugs are resistant to chemicals, including bleach, so they easily repel stains and are equally easy to clean
· Flexible yarns maintain their original firmness, so you get a long-wearing rug that's incredibly supple
· Lightweight for easy cleaning and relocating
· Woven to be incredibly tough and durable; Polypropylene rugs resist cracking in extreme temperatures
· Quick-drying, thanks to low water absorption quality and moisture barrier aspect of the yarns
· Stain resistant, so you can use these rugs in your outdoor decor without worry
· Outstanding resistance keeps your area rugs in high-quality condition for years
· Adds warmth underfoot in cooler temperatures and relief from hot surfaces in hot climates

STEPS FOR SPOT REMOVAL AND PROFESSIONAL CLEANING:
One of the most crucial areas of carpet and rug maintenance is removal of spots and spills. Acting quickly when anything is spilled or dropped and always having the necessary cleaning materials at hand are of the utmost importance. Natural fibers are inherently absorbent and should not be placed in areas that are damp or where spills are likely to occur (kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and porches).
  1. Remove spills immediately with a clean dry cloth.
a.    Liquid spills act as a magnet to any dirt particles that are in the carpet, causing the dirt to rise to the surface. This dirt may cause a dark stain. Immediately blot – do not rub – the spot with a clean, absorbent white cloth or paper towel. Rubbing can work the liquid deeper into the fibers, making the spill more likely to stain the carpet.
b.    To remove spots caused by solid substances, first remove any remaining material. Scrape it up with a spoon, always working from the outside of the spot toward the center.
c.     Silk Road Rug, Inc. recommends spot cleaning with dry cleaning products only, Capture, Host, Wool Dri. Pretest spot-removal in an inconspicuous area.
  1. If you are unable to remove the stain, professionally clean as needed, contact us to schedule pick up for deep handwash in our cleaning facility.
  2. Never steam clean or wet-shampoo a natural fiber floor covering as it may warp or bleed the colors.
  3. Keep doormats clean. Exercise preventative maintenance by placing absorbent mats at the most frequently used entrances to your home. Change or launder when these mats become soiled.

  4.
Professional cleaning methods provided by Silk Road Rug, Inc:
· Dry cleaning systems such as Capture®; Host®; Dri-Mate®; Wool Clean by Wools of New Zealand and Chem-Dry
· Deep handwash and flush by soaking, proper drying and deodorizing.
· Truck-Mounted steam extraction for tackless wall to wall installations. We do not recommend steam cleaning for loose lay rugs. It is better to deep clean in our facility to flush out deep stains from both the front and back side.
· We do not recommend any portable units; nor any Bonnet systems or Rug Doctor systems

WALL TO WALL CLEANING
Professionally clean as needed. Never steam clean or wet-shampoo a natural fiber floor covering which can cause shrinkage, discoloration, and/or staining. Please be aware that proper maintenance on natural products calls for Dry Clean Only provided by Silk Road Rug, Inc.

General Maintenance and Care by Fiber:
