Tabriz is a city with a long history of producing some of the most beautiful carpets in the world. It has its roots during the reign of Shah Abbas in the 1500s, when many of the familiar designs and motifs that are so familiar today were created. During the late 1800s, several designers came together for the purpose of reviving the industry.
They knew that their most lucrative market was in Europe and the United States. They began to create pieces that were intended to appeal to the styles and tastes of their most important customers. By the time this carpet was created in the 1900s, this carpet revival was a success and pieces such as this one were being produced and exported. These creations found their way into the hearts and homes of a global market.
This carpet uses an allover design that is executed with precision. The colors are more subdued than you usually find in traditional Tabriz carpets. The colors are in mellow hues of ivory, browns, blues, and reds. They brilliant reds and blues that you usually find in traditional Tabriz carpets are understated in this piece. They more in alignment with the color palettes that were part of the Art Nouveau movement and later Arts and Crafts movement that were popular throughout Europe and the United States at the time.
You will notice that small cloud bands are located in the repeating design that give it an oriental feel, too. This is a beautiful piece that has a formal quality and would make the perfect piece for a traditional design. It has an historical flavor that would also complement a Victorian, Arts and Crafts, or Art Nouveau design. It does not mimic these design styles, but it would blend well with them. This is a beautiful and unique antique carpet for any collection.
