It features to geometric pattern and has a tribal feel that would be perfect for design styles ranging from formal to Boho chic. The colors blend to create an elegant look that is rich and sophisticated.
The rugs created by various tribes in the Caucasus mountains have different characteristics that distinguish them. They use different patterns and colors that reflect both tribal and regional traditions. There is a village called Soumak, but the technique did not originate there. Soumak technique rugs are found throughout the Caucasus tribes.
This rug stands out among Caucasian tribal rugs because it was created with a different technique than traditional tribal rugs. It was created using the Soumak stitch, rather than the traditional knots. It is a type of flat weave technique, but it is not the same as the traditional flat weave kilims. This technique is much like brocading, and you will see long threads carried over on the back throughout the pattern.
The pattern of a Soumak rug is not mirrored on the back, as with a pile weave. These rugs are typically of a finer weave, and they are considered more durable than traditional knotted rugs. They are thicker than kilims and well-constructed. Soumak rugs are known for their bold and colorful designs, as with this beautiful example. They often use many of the same patterns found in knotted rugs, but they tend to be more stylized.
Soumak rugs have a distinct design repertoire that uses fine details and abstract, stylized design elements. One of the characteristic design techniques is to include larger elements that create the structure of the design and then include smaller filler elements in the spaces. The result of this technique is a carpet that has a formal quality that is perfect for a formal dining area or living area. It also has bold patterns and primitive quality that would make it perfect to a Boho chic or more informal room, too. Soumak rugs are not as numerous as pile rugs, making this one a rare find and a magnificent piece for your home or office.
