African Tuareg Mats
Did You Know That Tuareg Mats Are Not From Morocco?
That's right. Contrary to popular belief Tuareg rugs are not from Morocco. They are handcrafted by the Tuareg people, a nomadic Berber ethnic group that originates from sub-Saharan Mauritania in a vast area stretching from far southwestern Libya to southern Algeria, Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso. People tend to mistake them for Moroccan rugs because Marrakech is the main city from where they are exported for global trade.
Woven with reeds and bound by leather, Tuareg rugs were originally crafted to act as flooring or roofing for their tents.
Designer’s prize Tuareg rugs for their vintage charm and tribal motifs and have creatively incorporated them into living and dining rooms instilling a touch of natural beauty. These weavings' sturdiness also makes them well-suited for outdoor patios and vacation homes.
